Water/cement ratio versus water/binder ratio
With 180 kg of free water and 400 kg of cement, w/c = 180 ÷ 400 = 0.45. If the same 400 kg is a blend of 300 kg cement and 100 kg fly ash, w/b is still 0.45, while water divided by cement alone is 0.60. Label the denominator before comparing mixes.
A lower ratio needs a workable concrete
Changing the ratio changes water or binder demand. Placement, compaction, curing, aggregate properties and admixture compatibility still matter. A calculated ratio cannot establish the strength or durability of an untested mixture.
